How Custom Business Labels Improve Label Performance, Presentation, and Cost

When you think about what could make or break your pharmacy’s products, the business labels they feature probably aren’t one of the first things that comes to mind, but maybe they should be. Your business labels can influence how customers feel about your products as they eye them on the shelf, or after they receive them from the back end of the pharmacy.

The business labels you use can also impact customer perception based on how the labels perform for their intended purpose. In addition, they can impact your pharmacy based on how much they cost, in terms of whether the expenditure is justified. With these things in mind, we look at how custom business labels can improve the performance, presentation, and cost of your labeling solutions.

Label Performance
Label performance is largely defined by the type of adhesive used (e.g. permanent, temporary, opaque, etc.) and the composition of the label (e.g. paper, synthetic, unique blend, etc.). The goal of creating a custom label is to combine the best options to develop a product that the pharmacy is proud to distribute and works well for the customer. However, the best labeling for one application may not be the best solution for another.

For example, point-of-purchase coupons that are attached to shelf products should ideally contain temporary adhesive that allows customers to remove the coupons easily to present to the cashier and be comprised of a water resistant, synthetic material that allows the coupon to wear well, should the customer decide to apply it to a later purchase (if the option exists).

To use another example, business labels that are applied to prescription containers should ideally feature permanent adhesive that prevents the label from peeling away, and be comprised of material that wears well under the medicine’s recommended storage conditions (e.g., storage in dark, dry, room temperature conditions).

There are plenty of considerations to make in these areas, and that’s where a supplier of custom business labels comes into play. Working with the supplier, you can select adhesive and composition options for each type of label your pharmacy uses to maximize label performance.

Label Presentation
When it comes to presentation, business labels are defined by color scheme, graphics, material, and size. Many pharmacies prefer to have their recognizable color scheme and graphics included on prescription labels and labels for name brand, generic pharmacy products that carry the company logo, but less attention is often paid to label material and size.

Even so, the material of a label is essential to its presentation in two ways: how it affects the appearance of what is printed on the label and how the unprinted spaces on the label appear. The size of a label also impacts the presentation of its print, as well as the overall appearance of the container that features it. Label material and size should be carefully considered when designing custom labels for long-term use.

Label Cost
Because custom business labels are designed for the unique needs of a particular customer, one set of labels can be priced significantly different than another set. There are, however, two factors that significantly impact label cost in almost all situations: the material of the label and its size.

To minimize cost, reducing labels to the smallest size that allows essential information to be easily readable and graphics to remain recognizable and eye catching, and using the least expensive material that still preserves the physical integrity of the label, are primary goals. Although custom label suppliers are seldom talked about as “cost savers”, they can have a significant impact on how much you pay for labels by considering the cost factors of label creation.
