REDUCING THE COST OF QUALITY

How Shamrock Solved and Saved For a Large Hospital System

The Background

A prominent, large hospital system serving the healthcare industry in the Pacific Northwest implemented WorkDay, a cloud based inventory management system, including mobile printing and stationary printers. The WorkDay system utilized top of-the-line, alcohol-resistant thermal transfer labels designed for specific applications where hands risk exposure to harsh chemicals, including isopropyl and rubbing alcohol. Unfortunately, those labels came with a significant price tag.

The Challenge

This comprehensive hospital system needed a more cost-effective solution compatible with mobile and stationary printing that didn’t compromise quality, durability, and functionality. That’s where Shamrock Labels came in.

The Solution

To determine the best, most economical solution, we probed deeper into what the hospital system needed and what it didn’t. We recognized that alcohol-resistant material was unnecessary for their applications, so we suggested using thermal transfer labels.

We knew testing was the key to helping the hospital system make an informed decision. So, we sent several samples of thermal transfer labels in various sizes for their staff to test in their printers. We also included a direct thermal label sample for comparison. The hospital system was pleased with the results from the direct thermal sample. Shamrock’s direct thermal label quality was so superior the hospital system realized thermal transfer material was overkill. They immediately requested additional sizes of direct thermal samples to test, which proved ideal for their applications.

The Result

Direct thermal labels were the hands-down winner, providing high-quality results at a much better price than their original labels. The hospital system was so happy with the results of our direct thermal label that they converted all of their locations to four stock labels on their Vizient contract, streamlining their inventory with a more cost-effective solution. For easy printing on the go, the hospital system added a custom mobile printer. And, to best manage inventory and take advantage of cost savings, they entered into an annual Stocking Agreement.

More than anything, the hospital system was thrilled with our guidance during the entire process, especially exploring alternative label materials, providing a variety of samples, and encouraging their staff to rigorously test our labels, ensuring the right products to meet their needs.
